Gay Consumerism at Work NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESS COUNCILS
n May of this year a new national gay organization was born in Houston. The National Association of Business Councils (the 'Gay' is silent) serves as
a national umbrella group for a growing number of local business councils. Notably, the nine organizations currently listed as members of the NABC also have names which fail to mention that the groups are gay. Member organizations include the Greater Gotham Business Council in New York City, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Entrepreneurs (FLAME), the Key West Business Guild, Metropolitan Business Guild (Chicago), Executive and Professional Association of Houston, Greater San Diego Business Association, Los Angeles Business and Professional Association, Golden Gate Business Association (San Francisco) and the Back Bay Business and Professional Association in San Jose. By the end of the year, the NABC hopes to have active groups in Atlanta, Detroit, Provincetown and Denver.
Last weekend the Executive Board of NABC met for its summer quarterly meeting in Denver. Out Front spoke to Jerry Schiff. of the Greater Gotham Business Council and current president of the NABC. Schiff described the national group as a forum through which gay business can organize around issues pertinent to the needs of the gay business community and the gay community as a whole. He emphasized that the group is "non-political" although conceding that many of the concerns it hopes to address will raise consciousness and improve the status of gay people; the NABC, claims Schiff, will not involve itself in partisan politics nor try to influence legislation except bills which affect the gay business community. As an example of the non-political
work of NABC, Schiff lobbied to the Small Business Administration for inclusion of gays among those minorities which should be recognized under priority consideration for SBA funds.
Through its network of nine member organizations and two trade unions, Schiff says the outreach to individual people who belong to the group currently numbers 1,500 and is growing quickly. While rules may vary among the individual organizations, Schiff says that anyone involved in a business oriented fashion toward the gay community or anyone interested in the gay economy is usually welcome to join the local organizations. Benefits to members include information packets on how to organize business councils, disreferral directories, counts on MasterCharge and Visa for NABC affiliated merchants, and access to the mailing lists of other business councils. The Executive Board is also attempting to develop additional membership incentives.
While the NABC has created for itself a long list of short and long term objectives, the primary focus of the group is to increase the awareness in both the gay community and the community at large about the role played by gay business and gay people in business in the American economy. The organization hopes to achieve its impact by involving gay men and lesbians who have traditionally refrained from working in political modes through. openly gay organizations. Essential to the achievement of the goals is the establishment of a wide network of information and communications.
A Denver-based business council is only in planning stages at this time, but interested persons may call Lee Bacus or Bill Olson at 794-1579.
